MILITARY DRONE OPERATIONS: UNVEILING OUR NEW UAS MOBILE COMMAND STATION

Autonomous aircraft systems – commonly referred to as drones – have proven to be one of the greatest advances in military technology of the last two decades.

The latest drone technology has the capacity to perform a wide range of tactical operations including surveillance, target acquisition, munitions deployment, communications and even electronic warfare – all without the need for a human pilot on board.  Drones have the power to reduce risk and cost, with the added benefits of rapid, flexible deployment.

But autonomous aircraft can’t work in isolation – they’re supported by operational teams on the ground, often in remote locations, with advanced technical and support requirements.  These teams need safe, fit-for-purpose bases to work from – and that’s where the all-new UAS Mobile Command Station from EZ STAK Defense comes in.

Why do drone personnel need a command station?

Depending on the operation, drones are often used to access difficult terrain and even go behind enemy lines.  But they need to be operated and monitored from a safe location – and that can be anywhere.  Military personnel operating and monitoring drones need a safe, fit-for-purpose base to house all the equipment and supplies they need for spending days or even weeks at a time on missions in remote locations.  Our new UAS Mobile Command Station allows them to carry everything they need in a single vehicle.

Our advanced, 24’ enclosed military trailer features next-level capabilities developed specifically to meet the needs of drone-based field operations and is designed for fully mobile, rugged performance in even the harshest locations.  Equipped for onsite data processing, it’s packed with practical and technical features designed to facilitate efficient, safe working.

What are the key features of the UAS Mobile Command Station?

Our UAS Mobile Command Station is primarily designed to facilitate the efficient storage, launch and co-ordination of drone technology in virtually any location or conditions.

Exterior features

The trailer body itself features a robust steel frame with aluminum body panels for maximum strength and durability, with minimal weight.  It’s also built to carry a side-by-side ATV for ground support during drone operations.

The trailer is equipped with its own HD 10K generator and fuel tank for off-grid AC power (variable 110v or 12v), with an onboard HVAC system.

There’s an external smart screen with its own rigid pneumatic awning, and the unit also has two 30”x20” horizontal sliding tinted windows, rear ramp doors, a slide-out step on the passenger side door and two powered side awnings for environmental shielding.

Interior features

Internally, the unit is finished with marine grade timber to the floor for optimal durability and equipped with efficient LED lighting for a bright, safe working environment.

The walls are clad with easy-care PVC and the interior is fully equipped with our industry-acclaimed, purpose-built cabinetry.  This includes large and small storage solutions designed to contain everything military teams need for tactical operations and support tasks as well as camping on location – from clothing and tents to power cords, tools and weapons.

Workspaces are complete with folding desks to create versatile spaces according to the immediate needs of any operation – these include both standing and sitting desks with whiteboards and two further smart screens.

Our UAS command stations are fitted with ample power outlets ensuring there is plenty of capacity to plug in computer equipment, charge devices and more.

Key features at a glance:

  • Steel & aluminum construction
  • Reinforced to carry an ATV
  • Rear ramp doors
  • Tinted windows
  • HD 10K generator & onboard fuel tank
  • AC power – 110/12v
  • HVAC system
  • Power awnings to each side
  • 3 smart screens – one external with awning
  • LED lighting
  • Ample storage for drones, equipment, and field kit
  • Standing & seated workstations with whiteboards
  • Multiple power outlets

Informed by military experience

We believe the EZ STAK Defense UAS Mobile Command Station represents the next generation of tactical command units for the operation of drone equipment out in the field.  We’ve listened to feedback from military personnel and used that to inform the development of a station that is practical, safe and comfortable while also being equipped for the demands of live operations, often in inhospitable surroundings.

Our vehicles are designed and built in the USA.  We combine lean processes with a robust supply chain to ensure we can provide operational excellence and timely service to the US Military and a range of other high-stakes sectors.

EZ STAK DELIVERS A WORK-READY 22′ ENCLOSED TRAILER

When the power goes out, utility crews have to get onsite fast and get to work faster. That’s why many of them use trailers as mobile worksite offices and tool rooms. One large electric utility company in the northwest frequently uses trailers in the field, and they recently needed a new one. So, they turned to EZ STAK for a fully optimized and efficient enclosed trailer workspace.

The challenge: How to maximize efficiency

There are usually two options for sourcing a new mobile workstation. One, you buy an empty trailer and take it to multiple upfitters to install different components. Or two, you go with one upfitter who will supply the trailer and everything that goes inside, from storage to HVAC. This utility company went with option two and EZ STAK because they wanted to make sure all of the trailer elements seamlessly worked together to maximize crew efficiency. The only problem: they weren’t quite sure what that efficient layout should look like.

The solution: Consult, design, deliver

EZ STAK has decades of experience customizing mobile workstations for a variety of clients, including utility companies. So, we took the time to work with the client to understand what this trailer would be used for, who would be using it, and what it would be carrying. We also thought about ergonomics, weight and power capacities, tool requirements, the type of vehicle that would be towing it, and the climate it would be working in. From there, the EZ engineers put together a 3D conceptual design and after a few more consultations and tweaks, construction began.

The result: 22 feet of modern office

The final result was a 22-foot-long, 8.5-foot-wide, and 7.5-foot-high fully optimized mobile workspace. It has ample storage, including aluminum drawers, overhead cabinets, lockers, and adjustable shelving

units — all powder-coated white to brighten the workspace and prevent rusting. There is also a propane-fired heater, air conditioner, generator, shore power hookup, and, of course, all of the electrical needed. Other details like a whiteboard, corkboards, LED lights, maple desks, a bar fridge, and a microwave really make the interior feel like a modern workspace. Yet it doesn’t feel cramped. The cabinet layout maximizes the storage footprint while opening up a spacious middle aisle, allowing multiple people to be working inside at the same time.

Looking for an efficient and modern mobile workspace for your crew? Find out more about EZ STAK’s enclosed trailers at ezstak.com/enclosed-trailers or by calling us at 315.595.3300.

EZ STAK’s redesigned Truck Box hits the road

Lightweight and affordable, the heavy-duty storage cabinet fits in pickup trucks, cargo vans, and SUVs

Watertown, New York — August 4, 2021 — EZ STAK today introduced a new Truck Box featuring lightweight aluminum construction, a slam lock, and four sizes designed to optimize storage in your pickup truck. Revamped from a 2018 model, this latest version is more durable than any similar product in the market and just as cost-competitive.

Each of the water-resistant Truck Boxes is 13 inches high and 48 inches deep, but comes in four widths: 20 inches, 30 inches, 40 inches, and 48 inches. The 40- and 48-inch-wide options have dual drawers; the two others come with a single drawer.

Finished with powder-coated black faces, the drawers can handle 225 pounds apiece, while the top of the cabinet, overlaid with friction tape, can take 750 pounds. The drawers are also installed with slam locks that only require users to push the drawer closed to engage the lock.

“We’re really impressed with what our engineers have been able to do with this redesign,” says Calvin Lawrenson, EZ STAK’s business development coordinator. “Not only is the Truck Box more durable than anything out there, but it’s more affordable than our previous version and it can be installed in three different types of vehicles. Plus, it has the dual drawer option instead of just the single, which we know is a bonus for some.”

Those drawers also come with conveyor rollers with sealed bearings instead of the standard exposed rollers that other companies use. This means that dust and dirt won’t clog the sliding mechanism and prevent a smooth, quiet glide.

“Installation is easy, too, and our method avoids overt damage to interiors,” says Keith Omamalin, an EZ STAK automotive engineer who helped design the Truck Box. “Typical installations use self-tapping screws that can cause unfortunate holes in truck beds. But we use plus nuts that get around this.”

Optional drawer add-ons include rubber matting to minimize sliding and dividers to help organize tools and parts.

And, as with most of EZ STAK’s offerings, the Truck Box comes with a lifetime warranty. So, if it ever becomes defective due to materials, workmanship, or manufacturing, EZ STAK will repair it, replace it, or provide replacement parts.

EZ STAK INTRODUCES EZ FOLDING SHELF FOR DELIVERY VEHICLES

Robust two-shelf unit is easy to install and comes in 20 different sizes

Watertown, New York — [July 19, 2021] — EZ STAK today introduced an all-new folding shelving unit, bringing a rugged design, a lifetime warranty, and easy installation to a booming delivery industry.

Built with the heavy-duty aluminum and steel materials EZ STAK is known for, the new two-shelf unit is available in 20 different sizes for medium- and high-roof Ford Transit and Ram ProMaster vans. Each unit comes in four widths (48 inches, 60 inches, 72 inches, and 84 inches) and three depths (16 inches, 18 inches, and 20 inches).

The two shelves can easily handle a total of 250 pounds and come equipped with slow-fold gas springs, hemmed edges, and yellow corner guards, making the unit not just durable but safe for busy delivery personnel.

“It’s no secret that last-mile delivery companies are busier than they ever have been, and we know these shelves are really going to make drivers’ lives easier and safer,” says Calvin Lawrenson, EZ STAK’s business development coordinator. “We also know that because the industry is booming at such an astonishing rate, companies need interior solutions available quickly — and we can do that.”

Earlier this year, EZ STAK trialed and tested the product with a large delivery company, and the feedback from drivers was very positive.

“Drivers said the shelves work great for large and small boxes and that it’s great to have the room between the shelves for them to move,” said the company’s operations manager. “They also said the shelves fold very well and fit very well inside the van.”

EZ STAK’s engineers put about six months of work into the shelving unit, making sure the final product could easily withstand daily operations.

“Plus, because it comes unassembled, we also put a lot of thought into making it quick to put together and simple to install using existing mounting holes in the vehicles’ walls,” says Keith Omamalin, an EZ STAK automotive engineer. “We’re really proud of it.”

EZ STAK is so proud of it, in fact, that they’re putting a lifetime warranty behind it. Available with most of the company’s offerings, the lifetime warranty ensures that if the shelving unit ever becomes defective due to materials, workmanship, or manufacturing, EZ STAK will repair it, replace it, or provide replacement parts.

How to Use Your Trailer for Multipurpose

One of the top reasons why utilities across the country invest in enclosed trailers for their fleet is that they can be used for a wide variety of purposes. Instead of having separate vehicles for tool storage, mobile office/training, and emergency response, you can have one trailer that accommodates all those needs. This results in significant cost savings, takes up less room at your facility and reduces planned vehicle downtime.

4 Different Ways to Use Your Trailer

At EZ STAK, we design our trailers so that they can be used for multipurpose. With over 20 years working with utility professionals, we have been able to understand how they use the trailer to get the job done, and how it can be easily transformed to use for another reason.

Here are 4 different ways you can use your trailer:

  1. Tool Storage: Simply haul the trailer to the work site and have easy access to all your equipment needed to get the job done. Designed with shelving, cabinets, and drawers, you can keep everything organized from harnesses to hammers and safety vests.
  2. Mobile Office: When working remotely, mobile office trailers are ideal for supervisory staff. Equipped with desk space, meeting areas and whiteboards, we can assure you have everything needed to get laptop or paperwork done while away from the office.
  3. Emergency Response: From emergency gas leaks to storms and natural disasters, enclosed trailers are the perfect solution for your emergency response needs. We generally equip these types of trailers with generator power, scene lighting and plenty of storage for supplies.
  4. Mobile Training: Perfect for training crew members off-site, our mobile training trailers can include cabinets for storing tools and equipment, a boiler system, furnace, heat pump, hot water tank and gas fireplace.

Choose EZ STAK for Your Enclosed Trailer Needs

EZ STAK will work with you to consult, design, and deliver an optimized mobile workspace. We start by understanding your pain points and develop a concept tailored to your specifications. We then present a 3D design that maximizes space and drives organization. Once approved, we turn the design into a reality by completely upfitting the enclosed utility trailer with paneling, flooring, electrical, and cabinets. We then arrange delivery directly to your location.

Put Your Enclosed Utility Trailer to Work

Enclosed trailers are an important part of utility fleets across America. They are often taken to job sites and used as a mobile office, and to store and haul heavy equipment, tools, and utility clothing/gear. However, many companies do not use enclosed utility trailers to their fullest potential. For example, heavy wood shelving is commonly used, which decreases payload and deteriorates quickly. Some companies simply have empty trailers in their fleet, which are difficult to keep organized and do not provide a comfortable mobile workspace for crew members.

At EZ STAK, we optimize your enclosed trailer by designing a layout that will improve organization of your equipment and increase efficiency of your crew.

8 Options to Maximize Your Utility Trailer

Make the most of your enclosed utility trailer by considering the options to help you get the job done. Instead of working with multiple vendors to upfit your trailer, consider working with EZ STAK’s experienced team to transform your enclosed trailer, from the initial design to final delivery.

Here are some easy ways we can upfit your utility trailer for greater functionality and enhance the efficiency of your crews:

  1. Shelving: Designed with adjustable dividers every 10 inches, you can store a variety of equipment and tools on our shelving. For example, you could arrange the dividers close together to store hammers, screwdrivers, and wrenches, or easily remove them if you decide to store larger equipment such as clamps and cables.
  2. Drawers: Choose from side-to-side, front-to-back, or egg crate dividers to easily sort and organize smaller parts inside drawers. Designed with our EZ Latch, drawers can be opened with one-hand – a convenient feature for busy crew members.
  3. Closets: Designed with hooks, closets are ideal for storing safety vests, harnesses, and jackets. Boots can be placed at the bottom and hardhats on the top shelf.
  4. Countertop: Choose from aluminum or butcher block. Countertops can be used for an office desk, or a work bench. We can even install a bench vise on the countertop.
  5. Bench with Storage: Not only used as a place for crew members to take a seat, but bench units can also be used as a storage space with a hinged lid. This makes a great space for the fuel tank, battery/charger, and other equipment to store out-of-sight.
  6. Exterior Storage: With most utility tasks taking place outside, exterior storage comes in handy so your crew doesn’t have to make multiple trips inside the trailer to find tools.
  7. Generator/Shore Power: Install a generator or shore power in your trailer so that you can have electricity wherever your job takes you. Whether you need it to power drills or charge laptops and phones, we have the solution for you.
  8. Interior/Exterior Lighting: When using utility equipment, it is critical you have proper lighting to keep your crew safe. Exterior scene lights and flashers can be installed if your trailer is often parked on the side of the road.

Choose EZ STAK as Your Upfit Partner

6 Benefits of Enclosed Utility Trailers

Enclosed trailers are ideal for hauling supplies and tools to a job site or setting up a mobile office for day-to-day utility tasks or larger projects. These highly versatile units make working on a job site or moving between them much less complicated then loading up the back of a pickup or van. Having an enclosed trailer in your fleet is the most organized, secure, and cost-effective solution.

Top Reasons to Choose an Enclosed Utility or Cargo Trailer

With all the vehicle choices available, why should an upfitted enclosed cargo trailer be at the top of the list? Here are six reasons to consider:

  1. Multipurpose uses: One of the main benefits of having an enclosed trailer in your fleet is the flexibility of using it for multipurpose. For example, you can use the trailer as a mobile office space when working at remote job sites and use the same trailer for company events.
  2. Cost savings: Owning a trailer in your fleet can save you costs because of its one-time vehicle registration, less maintenance costs, and a longer lifecycle than vans and pickup trucks.
  3. Flexible design: EZ STAK will listen to your needs to design a trailer that meets your exact specifications. The simple design of enclosed trailers allows for a very flexible design, as opposed to a cargo van which has contoured walls or a pickup truck with wheel wells, restricting storage space.
  4. Safe transportation: Store your tools and equipment inside EZ STAK cabinetry to keep them intact during transportation. For an additional benefit, we can install rubber matting to avoid rattling while driving.
  5. Protection from weather: With most utility job sites being outdoors, it is important you have a space to keep your crew and equipment protected from the weather. Enclosed trailers are a great solution for this being weather sealed and installed with HVAC for a climate-controlled work environment.
  6. Security of tools: When working at a job site for multiple days, you can lock up the trailer each night and have peace of mind that your belongings are kept safe and secure.

Make EZ STAK Your Source for Enclosed Trailers

BUYING AN ENCLOSED TRAILER? HERE’S YOUR ROADMAP TO SUCCESSFULLY NAVIGATE THE PROCESS

Enclosed utility trailers have come a long way from their origins. Initially designed for carrying cargo in a manner that would shield it from nature’s elements, the world of enclosed trailers has seen an explosion in use cases. Whether it is energy, utilities, oil and gas, construction or infrastructure, or even municipalities, today, multiple sectors rely on enclosed utility trailers for a variety of reasons. From hauling cargo and transporting heavy machinery, to store materials, or setting up mobile offices, versatility and convenience are the very features that make enclosed trailers a high return investment across industries.

However, with a myriad design, pricing, and condition options to choose from, the process of buying enclosed trailers could be a bit overwhelming. Add to that the fact that there are hundreds of manufacturers and thousands of dealers supporting and selling enclosed trailers to North American businesses. Whether you are looking to buy an enclosed trailer, or are simply browsing for future needs, we are here to help.

EZ STAK is an industry leader in the production of custom enclosed turnkey trailers. With decades of experience in design-build-deliver of 12’ to 53’ trailers to multi-industry clients, we understand the requirements and challenges often faced by fleet engineers, fleet managers, or specification writers. Whether it is the materials, technical features, functionalities, or any other aspect of the utility trailer, we offer end-to-end customizations and work with you one-on-one until we find the right solution for your needs. Read on for some broad guidelines on buying an enclosed trailer.

Top Considerations for Buying Enclosed Utility Trailers

An enclosed utility trailer is an attachable trailer that features a complete enclosure. These trailers are an ideal solution for protecting cargo while hauling, due to their naturally protective design. Their supporting walls and roof not only ensure the safety of items during transportation, but they are also capable of completely adapting to their owners’ and operators’ needs. Here are some of the aspects to consider in your trailer buying to-do list.

What is the planned or potential use for the trailer?

One of the most important aspects of buying an enclosed trailer is deciding what it will be used for. The trailer’s future applications will determine the size and customizations of the unit(s) you need. A good example would be deciding between trailer types for a portable office versus storing materials. Using the trailer for materials storage would likely need minimal customization versus a mobile office. For the latter, you would be looking at electrical configurations, such as outlets or air conditioning, as well as other workspace elements, such as lockers, closets, drawers, workbenches, shelving, and bin units.

What type of trailer construction will you need?

There are two major types of construction materials for enclosed trailers – steel and aluminum. Although less expensive, steel is heavier than aluminum, less stain-resistant, harder to maintain, and has a lower average lifetime for a trailer. Aluminum is lighter and usually stronger than steel when constructed well. It has the added benefit of greater rust resistance, lower maintenance costs, and a longer lifespan.

For the interiors, your options are traditionally wood and aluminum construction. Wood is heavier than aluminum, although, like steel, it is less expensive. Aluminum is stronger, more flexible for construction applications, easier to maintain, and is much lighter, upwards of 40% lighter.

EZ STAK is an industry leader in heavy-gauge aluminum construction for cabinets and storage containers inside enclosed trailers, while also offering dozens of custom additions and modifications. Which axels and suspension would better suit your needs?

Choosing the type and quantity of axels when buying your enclosed trailer depends on what you are willing to spend, the height of the items you plan on putting inside, and what terrain you will traverse. While tandem (dual) axel trailers will generally be more expensive than single axel ones, the multiple axels also offer greater stability to carry heavier loads.

There are two major axle designs – leaf springs, and torsion axles. Leaf springs use metal springs, which are larger and heavier, while torsion axles use lighter rubber springs. For lighter loads or smaller trips, torsion axles are better as they are lightweight and less expensive to build. Larger loads or tougher driving terrain would benefit from the sturdier construction of leaf spring axles.

What trailer size do you need?

The basis of all purchases is the sizing of the enclosed trailers. The most common widths are five, six, seven, and eight and a half feet, with trailer lengths resting between eight and thirty-two feet. To provide some perspective, a custom vaccine administration station would likely be eight and a half feet wide and twenty to thirty feet long. On the other hand, for a one-person portable site office, you may not need anything more than six to eight feet in width and length.

What about trailer weight and towing capacity?

Every trailer can haul a maximum amount of weight, determined by its size and construction, including the frame, axels, tires, and springs. Refer to the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), which indicates the weight of the trailer plus the maximum load that it can carry.  If you already own the vehicle that you will use with the utility trailer, it is important to purchase an enclosed cargo trailer that is in line with the towing capacity of your vehicle.

Expert Tip: Maximize your investment by considering current needs, as well as foreseeing the potential needs of your business. An experienced and knowledgeable trailer manufacturer, such as EZ STAK can help your draw up the right specification and size for your enclosed trailer requirements.

Does your enclosed utility trailer need upgrades?

Due to their completely surrounded interiors, enclosed trailers are incredibly efficient for traveling in any weather or scenario. However, even with the built-in protection barriers to exterior elements, travel distances or terrains may determine the customizations or upgrades for your enclosed utility trailer. For driving locally or moving a project between nearby areas, there is not too much required. However, if your business entails traveling long distances, or through tough terrain, then your enclosed trailer may need certain upgrades. These would be anything from a taillight or a spare tire, to additional axles for stability. Even minor upgrades would make a huge difference to the overall form, function, performance, and longevity of your enclosed utility trailers.

What is the ideal budget for enclosed utility trailers?

The ideal budget for your enclosed utility trailer can vary greatly, depending on the size, capacity, and intended use of the trailer. From the lighting and shore power to electric awnings and interior cabinets, the numbers may add up quickly. With such a broad price range for enclosed cargo trailers, it may be challenging to define an ‘ideal budget’. It will all come down to your specifications, the use of your trailer, and the must-have customizations .

Our sales engineers have years of experience working with industry professionals. This has helped us to ask the right questions to gather information for the trailer layout and determine an estimated cost. We ask questions such as: What equipment will you be storing in the trailer? What tasks will you be performing inside and outside the trailer? What are your power requirements? These questions help us provide an optimized solution that suits your specific needs and is within your budget.

How to select a utility trailer manufacturer or dealer?

When buying an enclosed trailer, it is of the utmost importance that you purchase from a reputable dealer. The last thing you want is a trailer that falls apart during travel, placing your staff or goods in danger, and ultimately leading to costly repairs or replacement. For something that provides all the function and features, is safe and long-lasting, and flexible for the future, look for reputed dealers who can customize a trailer to your requirements and stand by their products.

COVID-19 Response Trailer Packages

The wide-sweeping influence that COVID-19 has had on the world is undeniable. Hospitals, clinics, and doctors' offices have been inundated with patients seeking treatment for the pathogens. The overtaxed healthcare system has spilled out of the established treatment facilities and has taken its mission to the streets — literally. Armed with fleets of enclosed response trailers, practitioners can tackle the pandemic without the limitations associated with fixed treatment sites. This flexibility not only allows them to venture to rural areas, but they can tend to patients in urban developments in an outdoor setting as well. Overall, this helps to lessen the odds of spreading the virus by minimizing the physical proximity between individuals.

At EZ STAK, in addition to serving the utility, construction, electrical, oil & gas, and public safety sectors, we cater to a wide range of municipalities throughout North America. In our effort to prevent the spread of the virus, we have developed a series of COVID-19 Response Trailer Packages to help our first responders in a number of areas and do our part in minimizing the spread. To learn more about these specialty enclosed trailers, we encourage you to visit our dedicated COVID-19 webpage for a video walkthrough of one of our response trailers.
